This year, I ran a Summer School programme to give local students a unique opportunity to learn more about Parliament, industry and the exciting career opportunities available in our area.

Students from UTC South Durham in Aycliffe took part in a range of activities designed to develop their skills and broaden their understanding of how government, business and industry work together. As part of the programme, they met representatives from local space businesses, the Royal Air Force and UK Space Command, visited innovative companies at NETPark and gained first-hand experience of Parliament.

A key focus of the Summer School was our growing space and satellite sector in Sedgefield and Aycliffe. Students were challenged to develop ideas and recommendations for how we can strengthen and grow this innovative industry, helping to create future jobs, investment and opportunities for local people.

The programme concluded with a visit to Parliament, where I was delighted to present certificates recognising the students’ successful completion of the Summer School. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and thoughtful contributions throughout the programme were a real credit to both themselves and their college.

I was proud to support young people from our area as they built their skills, explored future career paths and developed the confidence to succeed.
