Growing up in Newton Aycliffe during the 1980s and 1990s, I saw firsthand how limited job opportunities made it difficult for young people to succeed. Back then, it was normal that to build a successful career, you often had to move away.

I am determined to change that. Our community should offer young people the chance to build successful futures right here at home.

We have a unique opportunity to do this by building on our strengths in advanced manufacturing, space and satellite technology, and defence innovation – industries that are shaping the jobs of tomorrow.

One of my first achievements as MP was securing the future of Octric Semiconductors through the Ministry of Defence purchasing the factory. From the outset, I was clear that this investment must create opportunities for young people. Today, that commitment is a reality with the launch of their new apprenticeship programme, giving local young people hands-on experience in cutting-edge technology.

This is a powerful example of how targeted government investment can create real opportunities for the next generation. By continuing to support local businesses and industries, we can ensure young people in our area have access to the careers they deserve without having to leave home.
