In 2024, I worked closely with Defence Secretary John Healey to help secure the future of the Octric Semiconductors plant in Newton Aycliffe, protecting around 100 skilled local jobs.
The Ministry of Defence stepped in to purchase the site, safeguarding the UK’s supply of critical semiconductor chips, an important move for both our national security and our local economy.
Thanks to this Labour government’s investment, the site is now moving forward with confidence. A new apprenticeship programme has been launched, creating exciting opportunities for local people, including Sam and Evan, to gain valuable skills and build their careers here in our community.
This is a clear example of how targeted investment can protect jobs, support industry, and open up new opportunities for the next generation.
