Before becoming an MP, I spent two years working to save the Hitachi train factory in Newton Aycliffe. For too long, delays and indecision under the previous Tory government created uncertainty for the 700 world-class engineering jobs on our doorstep and the thousands more in the local supply chain.

Since coming into office, the Labour government acted swiftly, securing the future of the factory with a £500 million contract signed within months, followed shortly by another £300 million contract. In total, over £800 million of investment was committed, safeguarding the factory and protecting hundreds of skilled jobs in our community.

This investment not only ensures the continued success of Hitachi Rail but also supports the broader local economy, sustaining thousands of roles in suppliers and related industries. It is a clear example of how decisive action and government support can secure high-quality, long-term employment for our area.
